TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
Thermic cross-linking for PE-insulated cables
The automotive industry requires more and more PE-insulated cables, which feature a higher temperature resistance than PVC insulated cables. However, PE-insulated cables must be cross-linked after the extrusion process. Maschinenfabrik Niehoff GmbH & Co. KG, Germany, one of the world's leading manufacturers of machinery for the wire and cable industry, developed a reliable low-cost alternative to the common cross-linking methods, which have specific disadvantages. The new technology is based on a thermic cross-linking device and modified multi-way plastic spools of the Niehoff Package System (NPS).
The new thermic cross-linking system can be installed in every extrusion line and works in in-line operation with it. The best productivity is realised with an NPS double spooler. In this case, the system consists of a standard NPS SV400D double spooler, the cross-linking device with steamer unit and specifically designed NPS 400/400 XLPE multi-way spools with steam perforations. The double spooler enables continuous operation and automatic spool change at full speed. The filled spools are transported by means of a semi-automatic transport conveyor system into the cross-linking device. In the steamer unit, steam is guided through the holes in the spool onto the cable. When the cross-linking process is completely finished after 30 to 40 minutes, the spool is unloaded from the steamer unit, and the next spool can be loaded into the steamer unit. Units with two, four or six steamers are available. Compared with traditional methods, the new thermic cross-linking system requires low investment costs for the cross-linking device and little space.
With the exception of extruders, Niehoff and its partners can directly supply all the machines and systems needed to produce wire and cable, such as machines and systems for drawing, annealing, galvanic plating, bunching, take-up and braiding of wires made of non-ferrous metals and stranding and coiling of insulated high-quality data and special cables. The systems give the user the flexibility, permitting to react to market developments, achieving a sustainable reduction in operating costs and exploitation potential savings. The products and services offered by the group range from development and planning right through to hand-over of complete cable factories.
