TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

New fibre for use in geophysical environments

Specialising in the design and manufacture of leading edge optical fibre cables, optical connectivity and speciality photonics products for high-speed optical networks, OFS, USA, has recently launched its new line of GeoFibres optimised for down hole deployment and designed to meet the geophysical industry’s need for highly specialised fibres. The base fibres include four options of 50µm graded index, the standard for distributed temperature sensing, and four single-mode fibres for down hole and well-to-well data transmission. All fibres feature the dual coating system comprised of a hermetic carbon layer followed by Pyrocoat™ high-temperature polyimide (300°C).

“We have made tough glass for harsh environments”, commented Cathy Ciardiello, geophysical market manager for OFS. “Previously, geophysical conditions were insurmountable for optical fibres conventionally coated with acrylate. OFS has a unique dual-coating system used on all GeoFibres: carbon for hermeticity, polyimide for high-temperatures up to 300°C. The geophysical market has adopted graded-index 50 µm fibre, a telecommunications standard product as its standard for distributed temperature sensing. OFS has years of experience processing mega-kilometres of this product. The combination of this high-quality glass and the dual-coating system make our GeoFibres second to none”.
