New standard in 50µm cabling technology
Berk-Tek, USA, a Nexans company and a leading manufacturer of network copper and fibre optic cable products, has recently announced a significant improvement in the optical performance of its cutting edge 50µm GIGAlite™ multimode fibre, with guaranteed Gigabit-Ethernet distances now up to 750 metres, using 850nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). Further complementing the enhanced performance parameters at 1Gbit/s, Berk-Tek's 50µm GIGAlite fibre also offers improved performance at 10Gbit/s. With the Differential Mode Delay performance of the fibre guaranteed and maintained both before and after the critical cabling process, 50µm GIGAlite multimode fibre supports 10Gbit/s applications to 150 metres, a 66% improvement over comparable products offered on the market today. It is also fully capable of supporting legacy systems, including Ethernet and Fast Ethernet.
Berk-Tek is the first optical fibre cable manufacturer in the industry to offer a standard 50µm product, which delivers a 36% improvement over the IEEE 802.3ae distance specification for multimode fibre. The improved 50µm GIGAlite product will compliment the current GIGAlite-10 product, one of the first products guaranteed to 300 metres using 850nm VCSELs at 10 Gbit/s transmission speeds. When combined with enhanced cabling solutions, such as Adventum™, the company’s patented all-dry outdoor/indoor riser and plenum-rated cable, and Armor-Tek™, featuring aluminum or steel interlocking armour which can replace conduit or inner duct, the 50µm GIGAlite and GIGAlite-10 quality cabled fibre products set the industry benchmark for optical, mechanical, environmental and physical performance.
