TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
Tests on precision coil springs
Springs have characteristic force-deformation properties that are subjected to an exacting tolerance. Two test-specific quantities are decisive for the precision test of a spring: the measured average values and the variations of the measured value. Both are usually subject to strict requirements; for statistical tests, acceptance or rejection of the entire test batch depends on those two test-specific quantities. To get reliable statements about the spring quality, the test system has to be optimised to comply with the technical prerequisites for spring tests. For the compression spring test, the German company Zwick offers a device which, together with single-column testing machines and the company’s electronic testControl, can perfectly be used as spring test machine. The device is vertically and laterally extremely rigid and is already equipped with a precision load cell and an overload protection. It prevents the load cell from being damaged by accidental block movement. Precision guide-ways allow vertical movements of the compression platens. The rigid load cell is not sensitive to transverse forces.
The testing device is designed for an indirect length measurement. Due to the compensation of the very low inherent axial deformation, the indirect measurement provides a very high-accuracy. The ergonomic position of the compression platens in front of the columns allows an easy insertion of the spring. In compliance with the CE-regulations, the device can be equipped with a safety door. The safety device opens to the top, thus allowing an easy and quick access. In order to guarantee the high accuracy, the test system is supplied with mounted load cell. Special test programs for series tests for the final inspection and for development tests make this testing machine a universally usable testing machine.
