TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
New fibre optic system guarantees 30min functional integrity during fire
Dätwyler Cables+Systems AG, Switzerland, has launched Optofil Safety, a new fibre optic system solution guaranteeing functional integrity of optical data transmissions for a maximum of 30 minutes during a fire. The new system is especially designed for use in road or rail tunnels, as well as in office buildings. If used in conjunction with Dätwyler’s security cables and system components, it allows for reliable and safe energy and data transmissions during a fire. In such emergencies, Optofil Safety maintains communication between control centres and safety components, such as fire alarm systems, video surveillance equipment, SOS telephones, ventilation flap controls and light and sound signals, permitting them to remain intact for half an hour without restrictions. In addition, Optofil Safety allows users to save data at Gigabit-Ethernet speeds during an emergency. The new fibre optic safety system is available in two designs: Optofil ZGGFR Safety has a metal-free central lead design consisting of a maximum of 12 fibres; and Optofil wbGGFR Safety that is available up to 60 fibres with a stranded metal-free central lead.
The new cable fibre coating and flame-resistant stabilising elements are optimally adapted and also designed to provide protection against rodents. They resist tractions up to 1 and 6kN respectively, and have a crush resistance of 500N/cm. With 301 and 733kWh/km respectively, their fire load is comparatively low. Both designs are halogen-free and self-extinguishing, meeting stringent EN and IEC regulations. The cables are made from special materials with properties that prevent the rapid spread of fire and minimise smoke emissions. They have been tested according to IEC 60331-25, EN 50200, BS 6387 (CWZ) for their ability to sustain functionality. In combination with Dätwyler’s mounting components, supporting systems, fire protection installations and jointing covers, the functional integrity of the complete optical cabling system is guaranteed for at least 30 minutes according to DIN 4102-12.
