Decalub technology for frictionless drawing of steel wire

Decalub’s LVC/PDH technology gives a coat of dry lubricants to high or low carbon rod or wire, molten/liquefied to suit the application, the viscosity of which is automatically controlled during the wire drawing operation.

The system enables the production of 200–220 tonnes per die in the first draft with 0.83–0.88% C 5.5mm (0.218") diameter mechanically descaled bare rod drawn directly, without traditional wet pre-coatings, with die wear rate in last draft (9th draft) of 0.30 micron per tonne of wire drawn, with an output of 2.2 tonnes/hour.

The LVC/PDH system is an integral part of the Decalub DCCD process but it can be supplied separately to improve existing wire drawing applications.

It has been reported that after 50-60 tonnes of drawn high carbon wire the die wear was not measurable, even in exit drafts of a wire drawing machine.

The new rod/wire coating and lubrication technology features ‘zero energy consum-ption’ and operates at unlimited rod entry speed, making the new process one of the most outstanding ever obtained in rod/wire lubrication. The system is also used for dry wire re-coating in intermediate drafts, during drawing, in any draft, enabling frictionless drawing at high-speed – 16 m/s (3200 ft/min) with high carbon wire.

The lubrication system is used in the most demanding drawing applications, greatly reducing die wear and exiting wire temperature, improving wire ductility and enabling the highest drawing speeds, with all carbon steel rods and wires, and stainless steel alloys.

The LVC/PDH system offers immediate substantial cost savings in production of quality wires including spring, rope, bead, PC strand, stainless steel spring and alloys, galvanised high or low carbon wire, aluminium-cladded wire, plating wire, CO2 welding wire, colleted nail wire and so on.

All those products are drawn from mechani-cally descaled rod or acid cleaned rod, bare or pre-coated, bright or galvanised.

The process features the innovative LVC/PDH dry coating and lubrication tech-nology enabling an automatically controlled fusion of standard lubrication compounds, making them molten/liquefied with a viscosity suitable for the application.

Such a substance eliminates the need for traditional pre-coating chemicals and performs an exceptionally adherent and consistent residual coat, automatically adjustable in weight, at all speeds.

This wire coating/re-coating and lubrication technology achieves a hard residual coat for high-tensile wires (spring for instance) and a light water soluble film for plating wire.

One of the system’s new applications consists in direct drawing of mechanically descaled 0.72% carbon green rod, drawn directly without pre-coating chemicals, with sodium based lubricants in all drafts, enabling in-line wire cleaning for wire plating, galvanising, brass coating and so on.

The system is fully automatic and easy to operate and simple to install on any dry wire drawing machine.
