TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
Saxim molten salt bath furnaces
Traditionally molten salt bath furnaces
were only used in metallurgical processes. Today, however, they are being used in a variety of thermal treatments because
their efficiency and convenience assure
best results.
Saxim, a leader in this technology, designs and manufactures standard families of equipment for curing in continuous elastomer sheaths and insulation coatings, and for sintering in continuous PTFE tape wrapped wires. Saxim technology provides an integral production cycle, which also includes a washing and cooling system.
A final stage recovers salt from the water so as to avoid pollution and subsequent disposal problems.
The company says: “Our molten salt bath equipment guarantees high productivity, product quality and uniformity, convenience and reliable service over many years.”
Saxim markets specific equipment for curing in continuous rubber, silicone, EPDM and so on. The equipment is composed of modular units – one single unit works out at 5.5 m in length and achieves a maximum temperature of 250°C. Models with two-, three- or four-units are respectively known as FV 11, FV 16 and FV 22.
Saxim reports that the SR 24 model is much in demand for curing under pressure for the continuous production of Evaprene, Dutral, Neoprene (and similar) cable sheaths and coatings.
The company says: “The equipment combines maximum thermal efficiency and reliability with an automatic salt level control system.”
For sintering PTFE in continuous tape-wrapped wires and cables, Saxim has the FS 6 equipment that executes the thermal treatment below 400°C so there is no risk of emitting toxic fluoride compounds. Another benefit of this process is low energy consumption combined with high productivity. At the end of the production cycle Saxim’s REC 10/400 equipment comes into its own.
It is fully automatic and avoids the problem of wastewater disposal by evaporating and condensing the water. After a closed filtering cycle, the water is dried and cooled by the Venturi effect whereby the salt is recovered and returned as bricks, ready for the furnace again.
