Nextrom demonstrates high quality LWPF core preform production

The core preform shown below was produced at Nextrom’s Technology Centre in California, USA, to demonstrate the company’s progress in its LWPF produc-tion solutions. It has a core diameter of 35mm (not visible), a clad diameter of 175mm and weighs 5.31kg for a one metre useable core length.

It was produced using the Vapour-phase Axial Deposition method (VAD) which Nextrom is incorporating in its OFC 04 solution. It uses one core burner and two clad burners to manufacture LWPF VAD core preforms up to two metres long and 10kg in weight.

In Nextrom’s VAD process, a proprietary advancement allows clad deposition to continue after core deposition is stopped and this helps to minimise end losses.

The OFC 04 fabricates up to 2000 km core preforms – much larger than from the Modified Chemical Vapour Deposition (MCVD) method – with excellent fibre properties and is the best process choice to make low-water G652.C fibre cores.

VAD cores may be converted to large preforms by either soot clad deposition or tube sleeving.
