TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

High-carbon rod preparation system from Decalub New pre-coatings contain no liquid, and enable lubrication for frictionless drawing

Decalub has introduced a new high-performance steel rod/wire coating and lubrication process – LVC/PDH – totally dry, operating in-line at ‘zero energy consumption’ and ‘zero consumables cost’, and at unlimited rod entry speed, making the new process one of the most outstanding ever obtained in rod/wire lubrication. Traditional wet pre-coatings, including phosphate, borax, and their substitutes are eliminated. The LVC/PDH coating/lubrication system is used in the most demanding drawing applications, greatly reducing the die wear, enabling the highest drawing speeds, with all carbon steel rods and wires up to 0.90%C,The LVC/PDH lubrication system excels in the most demanding applications and offers immediate substantial cost savings in the production of quality wires including spring, rope, bead, PC strand, plating wire, CO2 welding wire and colleted nail wire, for example. All those products are drawn directly from chanically descaled bare rod, without traditional wet pre-coating chemicals. The process features the innovative LVC/PDH rod/wire dry coating and lubrication technology enabling an automatically controlled fusion of dry lubrication compounds, making them liquefied. Such a liquefied substance eliminates traditional pre-coating chemicals and achieves an exceptionally adherent and consistent residual coat, adjustable in weight, at all speeds.

The new wire coating/re-coating and lubrication technology achieves: • hard residual coat for spring wire, high-tensile rope wire, PC strand wire • light film, water-soluble, for plating wire.

The 5.5mm (0.218") 0.83%C mechanically descaled bare rod is LVC/PDH coated/lubricated and drawn directly, in-line, without wet pre-coating, to 1.85mm (.073") at 13.5 m/s (2700 ft/min) with virtually ‘zero friction’ – exiting wire temperature not exceeding 45°C (113°F), resulting in greatly improved wire fatigue limits and wire surface conditions. The new LVC/PDH wire lubrication process enables die life of 200-220 tonnes/die in the first draft, with 0.83–0.85%C 5.5mm (0.218") mechanically descaled bare rod drawn directly without pre-coating, and 60 tonnes/die in the finishing draft, with an output of 2.2 tonnes/hour. The spring quality bare rod is LVC/PDH coated and drawn directly from 5.5mm to 1.3mm (0.218" to 0.051") at 18 m/s (3600 ft/min), wire properties (cast and torsion test) are exceptionally consistent. The system’s specification can be found at www.decalub.com see ‘Newsletter’ pages. The system is easy to operate (fully automatic, with ‘zero maintenance’) and very simple to install on any wire dry drawing machine – no hot liquid tanks, no hot air blowers, no air wipes. The LVC/PDH unit can be operational within one hour.
