The new Fast-Lock system

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

New wire suspension system promises rapid installation of ceiling-mounted services

Thomas & Betts, UK, has launched a new system for suspending HEVAC, electrical and mechanical services from ceilings that is more versatile and flexible than existing methods. Called Fast-Lock, the system suspends ducts, pipes, cable trays and fans using steel wire rope and specially developed self-fastening locks.

Compared to traditional rod-and-bracket hanging systems, Fast-Lock reduces planning time and is also claimed to be much faster to install. Because the wire can be looped around overhead structures, in some buildings installation is possible without any drilling or anchoring. And where there is no access around the structure, Fast-Lock can be easily installed with purlin clips, flange clips or beam clamps.

With this new method it can take as little as one minute to fix each suspension point. Locks can be set precisely to get a perfect level and adjusted without any additional tools if ducts need to be rehung. This is a very lightweight system – a lock with a 1.5m length wire loop weighs about 90g, contributing relatively little to the stress load on a ceiling. The 2mm diameter wire is unobtrusive, a particular benefit in retail environments where services are exposed.

The fitting is easy to position and can be used with any manufacturer’s 2mm galvanised or stainless steel wire. In addition, Fast-Lock firmly holds both ends of the wire, so only one fitting per length is needed. The lock has an open design so wire does not have to be threaded through an aperture and because it is self-locking under tension, tools or keys are not needed.

A single size lock handles all loads up to 50kg per suspension point. Fast-Lock has a safe working load of 50kg and a 5:1 safety ratio (250kg). The fitting, with independent test certification by Lloyds Register and quality controlled to ISO 9002, is available with a 50m or 100m wire reel, boxed with carrying handle and wire cutters.
