TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
New next-generation metro optical solutions
Lucent Technologies, USA, has launched a new metro optical system designed to help service providers address both their internal needs and their business customers’ demand for bandwidth-intensive networks. The Metropolis® Wavelength Services Manager (WSM) is a new metro DWDM product that will help service providers deliver cost-effective optical bandwidth directly to their customers’ premises, meeting their wavelength needs in the metro access, inter-office and regional application spaces. The metro DWDM equipment market segment is expected to grow from an estimated US$600 million in 2004 to US$800 million in 2008. With the Metropolis® WSM, Lucent will extend its portfolio to the network edge, closer to the service providers’ customers, enabling enterprises to take full advantage of the capabilities of service providers’ advanced optical networks.
The modular and flexible architecture of the new Metropolis® WSM product reduces costs and complexity through a common optical platform, using DWDM and coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technologies. Advanced technologies, such as plug-n-play, reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexing (ROADM), and a standards-based control plane also enable customers to offer differentiated services with simplified operations. The Metropolis® WSM is part of Lucent’s existing optical networking portfolio, including the Metropolis® enhanced optical networking (EON), a 32-channel metro DWDM system. It is also fully supported by Lucent’s Navis® optical management system and the company world-wide services.
