Samsung introduces low-water peak fibre

Demand for low-water peak fibre, which already has broad applications in metropolitan and access networks world-wide, is rapidly spreading, particularly led by developed countries. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, Korea, a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies, has recently launched its new low-water peak single-mode fibre, WidePass™. The new fibre is designed to significantly reduce the attenuation around the water peak, thereby enabling optical transmission in the E-band (1,360 - 1,460nm). The product opens-up the window for network designers to use more channels in a flexible manner in their optical networks and also allows for implementing cost-effective coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology for current or future network applications.

Supported by exceptional optical fibre manufacturing technology, WidePass™ fibre retains the outstanding optical and geometrical properties found in the company’s conventional single-mode fibre, including several world records in currently unbeaten optical and geometrical performance specifications. In addition, the fibre features excellent long-term reliability against hydrogen exposure during the entire lifetime of the cabled fibre. Mr Byeong-Bok Jeon, vice-president and general manager of the Samsung Fibreoptics Division, commented: “Adding low-water peak fibre in the current stage to our optical fibre portfolio allows us to satisfy customer needs better. We will be able to provide customers with the best quality optical fibre available in the industry at a competitive price”. WidePass™ fibre fully complies with and exceeds ITU-T G.652.C/D specifications and other major industry standards.
