TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
An innovative high-speed single-screw extruder
Troester GmbH & CO. KG, Germany, one of the world’s leading suppliers of complete extrusion lines, extruders and machinery for the cable manufacturing industry, has launched an innovative high-speed single-screw extruder, model Rotospeed PXS 45/25 D. To create this new machine, the company’s engineers overcame existing process-related limits, while attaining an increase in performance at very high-speeds through a new screw design. The new Rotospeed PXS has been designed to operate at speeds of up to 800rpm. Based on this performance, the 45mm extruder can reach the same output as a 60mm extruder operating at normal speed.
Even when running maximum throughputs at highest speeds, the Rotospeed PXS provides an even, pulsation-free in-flow of the material and a linear conveying behaviour. The uniform plastification process enables the optimum melt temperature to be reached and stabilised. Mr Raul Friedrich, general manager of Troester‘s cable machinery division, commented: “It was not sufficient to only increase the screw speed. It was also necessary to specifically adapt the screw design to the high-performance plastification. In doing so, the individual screw zones can be matched to the processing of various types of plastics at high speeds. This provides flexibility for our customers“. Further flexibility is given by the very compact and space saving design of the new extruder. This is realised among other things by a CMG drive concept, which uses four individual three-phase asynchronous motors, which transmit their power through a pinion shaft onto a central driving gear. With its movable plastification unit, the Rotospeed PXS can be easily and quickly connected to the tooling by means of a quick-change clamp and a hinged flange.
The extruder is controlled by a modular automation system, which is configured according to the particular requirements of the application. This allows the machine to be operated either as an individual unit or as part of a complete line. The easy handling known from all Troester machines, also applies to the new Rotospeed PXS, which is operated by a touch-screen monitor. Process data are recorded and graphically visualised via a SCADA package (Supervision, Control and Data Acquisition). The company also claimed that the new single-screw extruder Rotospeed PXS 45/25 D will be optimally matched to its actual use. This includes the design of the screw geometry, as well as the mechanical integration of the extruder into the production line.
