TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
New cross heads for rubber and silicone products
Today’s manufacture of high-tech cables confronts ever increasing specifications, including thermal properties, flame-retardancy, safety in fire, chemical resistance, mechanical properties. It is obvious that most thermoplastic polymers can not meet all these specifications, leading to an increased use of elastomers, such as rubber and silicone compounds. Their polymer structure enables meeting a variety of specifications with the use of a wide range of additives. These compounds require not only special extrusion and downstream equipment, but also new cross-head technology. To meet these specifications, UNITEK Maschinenbau & Handels GmbH, Austria, has recently introduced UXH LMC (Liquid Medium Control) series, a new generation of cross-heads specifically designed for the processing of rubber and silicone products.
The new UXH LMC series features the company’s well-known free-flow cartridge, which minimises the danger of hang-ups, causing pre-cured spots and insulation faults. Most importantly, because of the excellent cartridge design, the new cross-heads work in fixed centre mode. Their temperature control is liquid medium-based and can range from cooling only (silicone) to thermo-regulation (rubber). Of particular interest is the model UXH 14 SC LMC, a dual layer extrusion head, which enables the extrusion of two insulation layers with an inner/outer wall-thickness ratio ranging from 10:90 to 90:10 without any adjustments. Special cartridges also allow the extrusion of striped cables. Another interesting model is the UXH 14 SC R cross-head, suitable for the extrusion of rubber. The head is fixed centred and features a cooled front section for connection to a curing tube. Fix-centred cross-heads help to save large amounts of scrap during the start-up procedure when processing connections with a long curing section
In addition, the company provides the automotive industry with two new advanced colour change systems, such as the UFW 22 system, which enable highest line speeds, maximum flexibility of production and minimum scrap.
