TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
Continuous extrusion process for a variety of feedstock materials
Outokumpu Holton Ltd, UK, a member of Outokumpu’s Forming Equipment group of companies, manufactures Holton Conform™ continuous extrusion lines, a method of extrusion which utilises the frictional forces that develop between feedstock material in a grooved wheel, a tooling set and an abutment. These forces cause the feedstock to increase in temperature until the material develops enough plasticity to extrude through a die that is supported in the shoe. In past two years Holton Conform™ lines have been shipped to customers in Canada, P.R China, The Middle-East and Southern Europe. Applications range from copper profiles to aluminium clad steel wires.
Holton Conform™ is used for a variety of applications from solid shapes, to aluminium tubes and cabling applications for non-ferrous metals. Recent development projects have expanded the capabilities of Holton Conform™ to process alternative feedstock materials. Examples of this are the recycling of scrap into a useable form and the processing of more exotic materials that benefit from the excellent metallurgical properties achieved with Conform™.
