Scapa Polymerics Presents New Cross-Linking Compound
Scapa Polymerics, UK, design, manufacture and supply innovative, high quality polymer based products to the international wire and cable industry. The company have recently presented the latest development in the Megolon range of zero halogen, fire retardant, low smoke and fume compounds (LSFOH) to the Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Digby Jones, during a recent visit. Megolon XLi710 is a silane grafted, cross-linking compound designed to meet the hot-set requirements of BS7211 for insulating low voltage wires for use in temperatures up to 200oC. Megolon XLi 710 introduces cross-linking to existing Megolon technology to increase temperature performance and offers excellent electrical and fire retardant properties. Cross-linking is achieved by adding silane to the compound, which is pre-grafted to the Megolon masterbatch to provide a stable and consistent product. This eliminates the need for cable manufacturers to invest in expensive electron beam technology.

Commenting on his visit to Scapas recently opened world-class manufacturing facilities near Manchester, Digby Jones stated: Scapas Megolon technology is a great example of innovation. The companys focus on continuous development to anticipate changing market needs is also impressive. Scapa sets a welcome example for UK manufacturing and export.

Megolon compounds were developed by Scapa to replace traditional wire sheathing materials such as PVC which can release toxic fumes and dense black smoke on burning. The corrosive gases produced can hinder evacuation from public areas and cause irreparable damage to electronic equipment. Megolon compounds are used to improve safety in London, Prague and Viennas underground systems, the channel tunnel and airports, shopping centres and sports facilities in more than 45 countries. Production capacity was increased earlier this year with the commissioning of world-class manufacturing facilities the result of a 3 million Regional Selective Assistance grant from the Department of Trade and Industry.
