New insulation for thin wall telecommunications applications
Dow Wire & Cable Compounds, USA, a world leading producer of polyolefin-based wire and cable materials, has announced the release of a new insulation compound for thin-wall telecommunications applications. The company is now providing commercial quantities of JQDB-2230 NT EXP1, a novel insulation compound which has superior performance for both outdoor cable use and indoor wiring applications, including high-speed telephone cable, indoor local area network (LAN) and other insulation applications.

JQDB-2230 NT EXP1 incorporates proprietary technology for performance polymers from Dow to provide increased melt strength and improved impact toughness versus conventional impact modified polypropylene copolymers. The improved molecular structure of the insulation compound benefits high-speed extrusion processing results, by moderately reducing extrusion pressures and by providing excellent surface smoothness. Thin wall insulation extrusion at speeds to 8,000fpm has already been demonstrated with good results. The enhanced high-melt strength characteristics make the material a candidate for other telecommunication cable applications, such as jacketing, profile extrusions, and potentially, for extruded foam applications. The new insulation compound has superior performance for both outdoor cable use and indoor wiring applications. An optimised anti-oxidant system enables JQDB-2230 NT EXP 1 to meet the stringent thermo-oxidative ageing performance requirements contained in the Telcordia GR-421-CORE and ICEA S-84-608-2001 telephone cable specifications. In addition, the insulation compound is mechanically robust with good impact toughness, abrasion and cut-through performance and excellent deformation resistance. This is especially beneficial for indoor LAN cable applications, where the lack of deformation is beneficial to electrical transmission in the tightly twisted pairs for the Category 5 and 6 data grade transmission use.
