| Specialising in the design and manufacture of pay-off and take-up equipment suitable for bare wire, bunched or stranded wire, insulated wire and fibre optic material, Wyrepak-Watkins Inc., USA, has recently designed an electromagnetic strand equalizing tension unit which adds individual, constant tension to the seven centre wires of a 19-end bunched wire contruction. For a good quality 19-wire bunched wire, it is necessary to have the highest tension on the centre wire, some tension on the surrounding 6 wires and less tension on the 12 outer wires.
The new Wyrepak unit provides the required constant level of tension. It features a sturdy frame that supports three capstans. Each capstan features an electromagnetic hysteresis brake acting against its rotation (the braking tension is set by a digital panel to each capstan). The seven wires are separated and passed around 2 capstan rollers that equally tension each wire. The centre wire then passes around the third capstan to add further constant tension. The twelve remaining outer wires are guided via the tension equalizer from the pay-off to the lay/spreader plate directly prior to the bunchers closing dies.
