| Chemetall GmbH, Germany, a surface treatment specialist, has recently extended its range of products for the surface treatment of non-ferrous metals with the launch of a new liquid copper pickling product, Gardacid P 4333. The new product is an inhibited, sulphuric acid containing pickling compound for industrial application. Used in combination with Gardobond-Additive H 7002, it removes both oxide layers and discolouration from copper surfaces.
Gardacid P 4333 is very versatile and allows for an extraordinary large window of application: it can be applied at concentrations of 15 to 30%, the temperature can vary from 15 to 40C, with treatment time ranging from 3 to 10 minutes. Therefore, applications may range from brightening up the surface to eroding material. Bath performance and control is by a simple titration of free acid, accelerator and copper concentration. The copper concentration should not exceed 40g/l, in order to prevent over consumption of the accelerator. The pickling bath should be agitated continuously. Ongoing filtration to separate floating and abraded particles is beneficial, as is cooling due to the exothermic nature of the pickling process.
