| Kabelschlepp GmbH, Germany, a leading supplier of plastic cable and hose carrier systems, has recently choosen to manufacture its products from BASF�s Ultramid� B3EG7, a low-viscosity glass-fibre reinforced nylon 6 that provides high-heat resistance, very good mechanical properties, as well as an excellent finish. Thanks to a long-term service temperature of 165�C up to 30� higher than most comparable nylons, Ultramid B3EG7 provides excellent reliability in demanding engineering applications. In the case of cable carrier systems, the material must be suitable for lengthy unsupported sections, exhibit low wear, and provide long service life.
Ultramid B3EG7 is an example of a customer-specific grade provided by BASF. It is in fact a standard product but with special properties designed to meet specific customer needs. �Customer specific standard products may sound like a contradiction in terms, but they give us the ability to meet specific market requirements while complementing our strategy of global grades-products that we offer throughout the world�, commented Mr Kurt H�fli of BASF's European engineering plastics business unit.
Kabelschlepp has decades of experience in the design and manufacture of dynamic cable and hose carrier systems. The company has developed products for countless applications including computer plotters, material handling systems, machine tools etc-in short, any situation where the movement of cables and hoses is essential to the operation of a piece of equipment. Cable carriers have traditionally been made from metal, but the virtues of plastic-notably lightness, quietness, design freedom and functional integration-have now led to its replacement in all but the most demanding of applications. BASF has provided Kabelschlepp with engineering support in the form of mould-fill simulation and warpage analysis, part of the mould design and optimization process.
