Innovative PLC-control system
Boston Matthews, UK, has recently launched the XL Extruder, a new entry-level PLC-control system that will enable processors to benefit from microprocessor technology without involving a massive departure from familiar controls found with traditional hard-wired machines. The screens have been designed to display information and instructions in a clear and simplistic format. The XL control system provides the processor with several benefits over hard-wired controls, including access to processing data, error information, machine history and in-built safety features preventing machine damage.

Temperatures are set for each zone using real-number input. Warning limits are also settable, including low-low, low, high and high-high. When the first level is reached, the operator is informed via an alarm. When the second level is reached, the machine shuts down automatically, preventing damage and possible downtime from occurring. The ability to monitor and alert any deviation from the extruder settings, allows the operator to concentrate on other areas of the extrusion process such as die alignment, product quality, dimensional stability etc. The XL also comes with Cold-Start Interlock that prevents the machine from being run until all the temperature zones have reached their set levels. A direct link between the XL control system and the extruders AC vector drive enables constant interrogation of the drive. This will source and diagnose any fault on the drive immediately it occurs and will advise the operator on screen of action that needs to be taken, eliminating the need for specialist drive knowledge. In addition, Auto-Heat Start Time and Date Setting allows the operator to set exactly when the extruder heats are to automatically switch on, saving time and increasing efficiency.

The New XL Extruder forms part a range of new microprocessor control systems that offer various options giving different degrees of functionality. These include modem link-up, desktop communications, number of drives under control and amounts of processing data available.
