Lucent to build intelligent optical network for Jiangsu Telecom
Lucent Technologies, USA, has recently been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Jiangsu Telecom, a provincial subsidiary of China Telecom, P.R China, to provide optical networking equipment that will be used to expand Jiangsu Telecom’s optical transmission network in Jiangsu province. “We need to upgrade our existing provincial optical transmission network to meet the increasing demands for multiple high-speed data services and we selected Lucent for its track records in technological leadership and in delivering cost-effective solutions and services”, commented Jiuming Sun, general manager, Jiangsu Telecom.
Lucent will supply the LambdaUnite® multi-service switch (MSS) and Navis® optical management system (OMS), as well as technical support provided by Lucent Worldwide Services. The solution will be used to build a next-generation intelligent optical transmission platform to support voice and data traffic in Jiangsu Province. The intelligent control plane on the LambdaUnite® MSS will allow Jiangsu Telecom to quickly turn-up its network as new network elements are added, and will also permit the Chinese company to offer differentiated end-customer services with different levels of protections.
Developed by Bell Labs, the LambdaUnite® MSS is a next-generation optical transport system and switch that bridges traffic between data-intensive metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. It enables service providers to seamlessly upgrade their networks and allows them to deliver new value-added services such as Gigabit-Ethernet. The compact size and low-energy requirements of LambdaUnite® MSS also means operators can make significant cost-savings compared to traditional systems. This flexible single-shelf system was recently optimised for smaller metro applications, supporting in-service upgrades from 160G to 320G, as well as to 640G. With Lucent’s Navis® OMS, Jiangsu Telecom can perform single-user, automated provisioning, routing and proactive service assurance of optical networks and services allowing rapid turn-up of customer services. By using the advanced fault correlation capabilities, the software allows Jiangsu Telecom to quickly identify and restore customer services.
