Wire Expo 2004: Industry moving in right direction

Held June 12-16 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Wire Expo 2004 provided further confirmation that the industry is continuing to move in the right direction. The organiser, Wire Association International Inc., confirmed a positive and energetic buzz on the show floor, as well as at the technical programme. Many manufacturers were busy and there was talk about working overtime and of some companies hiring again as the industry settles into what seems to be a generally more stable picture. The technical programmes had respectable attendance, including for the new three-part fundamentals of wire manufacturing course (refer to EuroWire N° 37). The business tracks programmes, highlighted by a panel session on “Evolving your organization for success,” covered a range of issues of interest to any business.

The exhibits and technology are the key to Wire Expo, but the event, the largest such event this year in North America for the wire and cable industry, also presented a networking opportunity and a barometer of the industry pulse: it was a time for the industry to reconnect, to see where it is going, and the results were uplifting. Mr Giulio Properzi, WAI President, described the event as a positive statement. “Wire Expo was a good event and one of the reasons why is that companies were once again focusing on the business of business. There were many good discussions and the attention is where it belongs. This is what is needed for the industry to continue its return”, he commented.

Following the wire-cutting ceremony, attendees flowed into the exhibit area where 280 exhibiting companies displayed their latest technology and services. Wire Expo 2004 was fortunate to have the support of seven groups as sponsors, including one (AWPA) that co-located one of its events and two others (SPE and ASM) that contributed to the technical programme. The sponsors included the American Wire Producers Association (AWPA); ANTAAC, a Mexican wire producers association; Australasian Wire Industry Association (AWIA), ASM International, Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and the Wire & Cable Industry Suppliers Association (WCISA). During the event, the WAI held its 74th annual convention.

The Wire Association International’s next major event, Interwire 2005, will be held May 14-19, 2005, at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, USA.
