New fibre soot technology launched in China
Nextrom, Switzerland, has recently been awarded a contract from Jiangsu Fasten Photonics Co. Ltd, P.R. China, for the installation of a new OFC 05 horizontal soot deposition system for preform cladding. The OFC 05 for soot clad deposition lets fibre makers eliminate purchased clad sleeving tubes by depositing the highest-purity synthetic glass directly on their existing preform core rods, substantially lowering fibre cost. The system works with existing MCVD cores to produce larger finished fibre preforms at twice the productivity of competing equipment. Other benefits compared to sleeving tubes include enhanced fibre geometry with improved cut-off wavelength accuracy and improved proof-test and final-test fibre yields. Fasten Photonics will begin production with the system in early 2005.
Nextrom is now releasing the new product OFC 05 horizontal soot deposition system, which is an addition to the company’s existing soot product family. OFC 05 is a horizontal version of OFC 06 vertical soot deposition system that was released last year (refer to EuroWire N° 34). OFC 05 has most of the same features as OFC 06 but does not need a tall building. Nextrom is releasing a horizontal soot cladding system because some customers have their clean rooms built already and cannot make them easily taller.
Fasten Photonics was the first Chinese fibre maker to adopt soot cladding technology. With this new equipment from Nextrom, the Chinese company will support the growing demand for optical fibre in China by increasing production of optical fibre preforms with the highest-productivity soot cladding technology commercially available today.
