New underground extra high-voltage cable in Austria
Pirelli has recently been awarded a contract by the Austrian electricity company Wienstrom GmbH to expand and strengthen the power transmission grid of the city of Vienna with the supply of new extra high-voltage (EHV) underground cable connections. The contract involves the complete turnkey installation of two 380kV underground cable links connecting existing overhead lines in the suburb of Vienna to the inner city. This project will be performed over the next two years and will include the supply and installation of over 30km of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated EHV power cables, as well as all related cable accessories.
Over the last decades, Pirelli has supplied the majority of the 380kV fluid filled cable traditionally used in Vienna. This longstanding relationship with Wienstrom now continues with their decision to use XLPE cable for this project, a first both in Vienna and in Austria at this voltage level. Pirelli has designed the cable system to meet Wienstrom's specifications, implementing engineered solutions to fulfill both the particular environmental requirements as well as foreseeing a cooling system, which allows for future demands of increased power transmission.
