CORPORATE NEWS:

France Télécom expands broadband strategy

Facing competition from new entrants and local and regional government projects, is not taking any chances, France Télécom has recently presented its latest broadband strategy to a French mayors conference. The strategy, which was unveiled last June and has updated since then, comprises new technologies and relaxed requirements for DSL deployments in rural areas. Today, there are more than 100 municipal and regional government projects in various stages of development. In many cases, these government projects seek to provide carrier neutral fibre infrastructure to stimulate competition in areas where France Télécom is the dominant carrier. Many projects in very rural areas aim also to introduce broadband infrastructure where France Télécom has not introduced broadband services for economic reasons. One of the latest projects includes satellite and WiFi. France Télécom said it will install DSLAMs in all the central offices that have more than 1,000 lines by 2005 and make ADSL available for central offices with less than 1,000 lines where there are 100 customers asking for the service in the same zone. By year-end 2005, France Telecom will make ADSL available to 90% of the population. France Télécom is also offering to connect to small cities using fibre. Today, France Télécom has installed fibres in 900 cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. In very rural areas, the former monopoly is testing a service using satellite with WiFi to connect subscribers.
