CORPORATE NEWS:
Call for papers for Focus 2006
“If your work is of interest to the worldwide wire and cable industry, then it should be presented at the IWCS/Focus Conference,” says John Barteld, Chief Executive Officer of the International Wire & Cable Symposium (IWCS).
The annual event is the world’s premier venue for the presentation of new wire and cable industry technologies and trends
Technical papers and research studies are being called for in the areas of designing, manufacturing, processing and using products in the communications, data, electronics, power, industrial, automotive/aerospace and speciality wire and cable sectors.
The authors of the selected papers will be called to present them at the 55th IWCS/Focus Conference which is scheduled to
take place from 12–15th November in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.
In the first place, potential authors should submit an abstract online at www.iwcs.org giving the following information: title of paper, name(s) of author(s) and an outline description up to 500 words.
The deadline for receiving abstracts is 28th April 2006.
Abstracts can be submitted from industry or academic professionals, from any geo-graphic location, that are engaged in the wire and cable industry.
Acceptance of abstracts will be based on originality, content, applicability, market interest and clarity. Successful authors will be notified of their acceptance by 31st May 2006. Completed papers should then be submitted online by 15th August 2006.
Past article topics have included cable, fibre and conductor design, new cable materials, processing and manufacturing developments, network demands, assem-bly and installation techniques, cable components, connectivity, market studies, testing and standards.
Additional ideas for leading-edge topics fall in to nine broad categories: ‘The last mile’; New cable designs; Cable instal-lation methods; Convergence; Advances in materials technology; Optoelectronic applications; Power cable; Speciality cables; and Other cable applications.
Topics under ‘The last mile’ could include: broadband products; broadband over power lines; drop cables; Factory Installed Termination Systems (FITS); fibre in the horizontal; fibres optimized for access; fibre types and properties in the home; high bandwidth copper solutions (ADSL, ADSL+, ADSL2+, VDSL, xDSL); next generation Ethernet; power over Ethernet; VOIP deployments; wireless broadband solutions; and Telco TV technologies.
Topics under ‘New cable designs’ could include: ‘Alternate Right-of-Way’ cables; dry cable technology; microcables; optical ground wire; premises cables; submarine cables; and unique power cables.Topics under ‘Cable installation methods’ could include: aerial cable installations; cable blowing systems; direct buried cable; installation in gas or water pipes; mini-trench installations; and novel Right-Of-Way installations.
Topics under ‘Convergence’ could include: automotive assemblies; cable assembly and wire harnesses; and connectors.
Topics under ‘Advances in materials technology’ could include: copper pro-cessing; flame retardant technology in cable design; nanotechnology; novel plastic compounds and applications; rheology; special fillers; and strength elements.
Topics under ‘Optoelectronic applications’ could include anything on fibre in power cables, while topics under ‘Power cable’ could include: copper alloy development; electrical properties and degradation; high capacity power cables; and superconductivity.
Topics under ‘Speciality areas’ could include: automotive cables; cable solutions for harsh environments; controller area network solutions; developing markets (such as China and India); industrial cabling; intelligent patching (copper and fibre);
and standards.
Topics under ‘Other cable applications’ could include: data centres; long haul and metro data; transmission systems; power distribution systems; submarine cable systems; and wireless installations.
