CORPORATE NEWS:

University of Stuttgart chooses Nextrom’s optical fibre technology

Nextrom has been selected by the University of Stuttgart’s Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) to supply manufacturing equipment for the development of new optical fibres for high-power lasers of the future.

The IFSW is highly regarded as one of the leading laser research centres worldwide and Nextrom is delighted to have been selected to supply a MCVD preformer, a fibre draw tower and various auxiliary equipment for automatic material refilling and waste gas treatment.

The fibre production facility that will be installed at the institute during the course of this year, will mainly be used for research on fibre delivery for the next generation of industrial lasers with very high brightness. To allow the flexible and reliable delivery of multi-kilowatt lasers (for example, thin disk lasers) with near-diffraction limited beam quality over distances in the order of 100m, new concepts have to be developed.

For example, the power densities have to be kept sufficiently low to avoid losses due to non-linear effects. At the same time, power and beam quality have to be preserved even under significant, non-uniform bending of the fibre. This may be combined with other features, as for example polarisation conservation. One possible concept to achieve this are evanescently coupled multicore fibres.

Later on, using novel pumping concepts, the field of research may be expanded to encompass fibre lasers also.

Nextrom is the world's premier supplier of manufacturing solutions and services to the fibre optic industry and supplies optical fibre manufacturing systems for fibre drawing, deuterium treatment, proof-testing, colouring, ribbon and blown fibre (EPFU), as well as preform manufacturing systems for core preforms by MCVD or VAD technology, and cladding by tube sleeving (RIT, RIC) or soot cladding with related equipment such as sintering, degassing and preform stretching.

Together with its sister company Rosendahl, a global supplier of high-end cable equipment and turnkey solutions in the field of extrusion, SZ stranding, forming, welding and corrugation, Nextrom offers state-of-the art technology with long experience in the wire, cable and fibre business. Rosendahl and Nextrom belong to the Knill Group in Austria.
