CORPORATE NEWS:

Sheffield Steel contract goes to Siemens

The American steel producer Sheffield Steel has awarded Siemens a contract for the engineering, supply and turnkey installation of a new ladle furnace with a capacity of 85 tonnes. Up to 750,000 tonnes of a full range of carbon and low-alloy steel grades will be treated in this furnace. The start-up of this new facility is scheduled for the autumn this year.

Sheffield Steel, the only steel manufacturer in Oklahoma, is a regional mini-mill producer capable of producing 650,000 tonnes of steel per year.

The company supplies hot-rolled steel bar products, concrete reinforcing bar, fabricated products (such as fence posts, railroad track spikes and fabricated and epoxy-coated rebar for highway and construction purposes).

It also produces various types of billets which are converted to finished products elsewhere.

Sheffield Steel placed this order with Siemens so that it could improve its steel-production logistics as well as the quality of the steel produced.

For Siemens the scope of the project also includes the supply of auxiliary equipment, including a Level 2 process-optimization system, a ladle-furnace transformer, ladle turret, an alloy- and lime-addition system, a fume exhaust system and a water-treatment facility.
