IWCS savours winning formula for Focus

There was much for the board and staff of the International Wire & Cable Symposium (IWCS) to enjoy in the aftermath of the 54th annual Focus conference: attendance was up 25% on the 2004 event and exhibition space almost doubled.

Since it is the world’s premier venue for the presentation of new, original wire and cable industry technologies and trends, it was not surprising that Focus attracted presentations of over 100 new and previously unpublished papers. But the scope and quality of the presentations was inspiring. The research and development covered new and upgraded wire and cable materials, designs, manufacturing methods, processing techniques, testing procedures, standards and regulations.

The concurrent Suppliers’ Exhibition featured over 110 different exhibitors of materials, accessories, machines and services for making wire and cable in the communications, data, electronics, power, industrial, automotive/aerospace and speciality segments. Total occupied floor space was 1170m2, nearly a 50% increase in exhibit space compared to the previous year.

About a dozen suppliers presented their latest products at a New Product Presentation session, which generated much interest.

Total attendance at the IWCS/Focus Professional Development Courses was 30% up on 2004. Eight courses were presented this year and subject matter included: optical fibres, fibre optic cables, copper conductors, metallic cables, fire performance testing, polymer flame retardancy, extrusion technology, WEEE and RoHS directives and the selection of wire and cable materials.

At the 2005 event, two other organisations – KMI Research and the Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO) – co-located their conferences with Focus.

This was generally applauded as a positive move as it provided more educational, business and networking opportunities for attendees of the three different conferences.

The staging of Focus in Providence was not a coincidence. IWCS Chief Executive Officer John Barteld recalled that within a small radius of the city, the American wire and cable industry had its beginnings over a hundred years ago.

“Even today there is still a strong representation of the industry here,” said Mr Barteld, “and IWCS is pleased to return to these roots.”

Focus will again be held in Providence, from 12–15th November 2006 .
