CORPORATE NEWS:
Railway signalling standardisation boost
Alcatel equipped the cross-border railway line linking Vienna to Budapest which was officially inaugurated in Autumn 2005.
This project was part of the European train signalling standardisation programme supported by the European Commission.
It is the first line to fully use the European Train Control System (ETCS).
ETCS systems ensure the transmission of information from the track to the train along the whole line, enabling the on-board equipment to calculate and continuously monitor the maximum speed allowed.
The implementation of inter-operable ETCS on this cross-border line enables trains
to run faster thus significantly increasing network capacity, while at the same time improving the line’s safety.
More ETCS contracts seem to be flowing Alcatel’s way too. The company has been appointed sole supplier for both on-board and track side ETCS equipment by the national railway operator MAV from Hungary. ÖBB from Austria has asked Alcatel to supply the track side part of its ETCS Level 1 solution.
“The inauguration of the Vienna-Budapest line marks a milestone in the deployment of a common European rail signalling system that makes cross-border traffic faster, cheaper and safer,” says Serge Tchuruk, Chairman and CEO of Alcatel. The company is currently involved in 15 out of the 20 major commercial ETCS projects in progress in Europe.
