Olympic-size opportunities for wire
The news that London will host the
Olympic Games in 2012 should send a buoyant message to the wire industry,
says Barnsley-based Lifting Solutions.
The company is no stranger to Olympic projects itself, having supplied almost 25km of 7mm and 8mm diameter rope
for the opening and closing ceremonies
at Athens 2004. At one point during the rope’s fabrication in Barnsley, European supplies of the appropriate diameters of steel wire rope were completely exhausted says the company.
Lifting Solutions lays claim to have played a part in helping secure the Games. It supplied an enormous supporting structure of steel wire rope holding up what is believed to
be Europe’s largest ever banner. This was erected for the International Olympic Committee’s evaluation visit to London in February last year. The giant banner was erected on the roof of The Dome and covered some 8,200m2.
