CORPORATE NEWS:

Grants for ‘green’ steelmaking technologies in Canada

Techint Goodfellow Technologies (TGT), Canada, has received a C$4m grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), a government agency, towards the further development of its EFSOP system.

EFSOP stands for Expert Furnace System Optimization Process, and TGT has developed it for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Basic Oxygen Furnace steelmaking is one of three industries in Canada that has been identified as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas generation.

Goodfellow EFSOP technology is the world’s leading off-gas-based process control system for EAFs. It measures and analyses EAF off-gases (CO, CO2, H2, O2) continuously at the fourth-hole for real-time closed-loop process control of EAF steelmaking, resulting in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs and safety benefits.

Techint will lead the consortium under-taking the development work. The consortium also includes Unisearch Associates, the University of Toronto and the Ontario Centre for Environmental Technology Advancement. The project will develop new sensors, instruments and novel process control strategies.

Raimondo di Carpegna, Chairman of the Board of TGTI, stated: “This contract is a key building block in developing a sustainable business for Techint and to achieve our goal to be a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in process engineering for the Techint Melt Shops Business Unit.”
