Southwire makes it 11 in China
With the recent sale of a second SCR copper rod system to Jiangxi Copper Alloy Materials Company, Southwire has chalked up its eleventh installation in mainland China. The SCR 4500 is designed to produce 35 tonnes per hour and is capable of producing 220,500 tonnes of rod per year. The project includes the design of all operating equipment, from a skip cart furnace loader to a finished rod handling system.
“We are very excited about the second copper rod system project with Jiangxi Copper Alloy Materials Company,” says Will Berry, president of SCR Technologies. “They produce very good quality rod for the Chinese Market and operate at above average efficiencies. On their first system, they were producing quality rod above the system’s rated capacity within four months from initial start-up.”
Southwire’s SCR team will be responsible for the design of the furnace system consisting of a loader, melter, holder and launder system, the casting machine, automatic metal pouring system, bar preparation unit, and computer monitoring system.
The company will also supply all the equipment for these systems except the fabricated steel assemblies of the furnace system and the bar preparation unit.
Continuing many years of cooperation, Southwire will subcontract to Morgan Construction Company the manufacture of the rolling mill, the rod delivery and cleaning system, the rod coiling system and the conveying system for the second Jiangxi project.
Southwire and Morgan have worked together for more than 40 years to supply state-of-the-art continuous rod systems to the copper and aluminium industries.
Siemens Electric USA will provide the electrical controls for this system and
KM Europa Metal AG will supply the copper rings for the casting machine.
Seventy-one continuous-cast SCR copper rod systems have now been sold world-wide. Southwire claims it is “the world leader in ETP (electrolytic tough pitch) copper rod production”, a position it says is maintained by its system’s “ease of operation, low operating costs and high operating efficiencies in producing quality rod to meet international standards”.
In addition to copper rod mills, Southwire also sells SCR systems to produce electrical conductor, electrical alloy, and mechanical alloy aluminium rod.
