CORPORATE NEWS:
IWCS/Focus: a packed,and possibly provocative, programme
The draft programme for this year’s IWCS/Focus™ conference is a packed one – packed with top industry specialists speaking on their chosen subjects. The range is, as ever, broad and
all-encompassing.
Before the subject sessions start in earnest, there is the Executive Forum – chaired by Edward Fenton and Robert Willis (of Fluoropolymer Resources Inc and Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) respectively) – and the Executive Leadership Summit – moderated by Dave McCurdy, President of the EIA.
At the summit, a panel of industry executives will provide perspective on the state of the industry and the impact of market shifts, including consolidation and continuing excess capacity, on the future of the wire and cable industry. Speakers from user industries will provide instigation for the perspective of the wire and cable executives in the panel. The panel members and industry speakers have yet to be announced, but this is sure
to be the most provocative element of
this year’s programme. Check the IWCS website – www.iwcs.org – for the latest information.
At the conclusion of the summit, all participants will be invited to a reception where speakers, panellists and audience alike will no doubt continue to share
their views.
The subjects so far for the Executive Forum include a look at product applications for 10 Gigabytes over copper in the LAN, a systematic approach to the calculation of ‘last mile’ economics, the analysts’ view
of market developments in wire and cable, and the latest developments in standards
for testing and safety.
The conference takes place over four
days from Sunday 13th to Wednesday
16th November 2005 in Rhode Island, USA. There are seventeen subject sessions in total and each comprises a number of papers. The first four sessions take place after lunch on the second day and have broad titles as follows: Fibre optic cable and apparatus for FTTx applications; Novel cable designs for indoor applications; Improved materials and processing; and Copper network cables.
The morning of the third day – Tuesday
15th November – is taken up by the
Plenary Session. The first keynote speaker is Dale Hatfield, Adjunct Professor, Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Programme, University of Colorado, speaking on Lessons from the digital divide.
The second speaker is Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Director, ETH, Pune, speaking on Triple Play Broadband: What’s happening in India? The third presentation will be a joint one from Professor Izyaslav Peshkov and Dr Genady Meschanov of VNIIKP, Moscow, speaking on The cable industry
of Russia and the CIS.
Sessions five to nine will take place on Tuesday afternoon/early evening. The broad titles are: Aerial fibre optic cables; Unique design, testing and applications
in fibre optics; Transmission; and Flame and smoke retardants. The ninth session will be the ‘poster papers’ session. As EuroWire went to press, there were thirteen confirmed submissions.
Sessions 10 to 17 will occupy the last day: Wednesday 16th November. The broad titles are: Standards and fibre design; Special applications – copper cable; Fibre optic coatings and materials; Cable design for FTTx applications; Fibre optic cable installation; Fibre optic cables for the access network; and Cable materials: regulations and testing. The 17th session will be for papers submitted after the official deadline and these titles will be posted at the conference.
Within the programme of the IWCS/Focus conference there is also a series of Professional Development Courses led by industry experts. The offerings include basic concepts in core courses related to copper, fibre and materials. Additionally, courses are offered in the latest technology issues facing the industry.
For 2005, IWCS/Focus will present the core courses of Copper 101, Fibre 101
and Materials 101. In addition, the tentative schedule of new technologies courses include: Recovery of hazardous substances; Overview of wireless cables/ systems; Fundamentals of fire science; High Frequency testing; Wire and cable equipment design; State-of-the-art control equipment; ‘Holey’ fibres; and Standards in industrial cables.
For the first time, KMI Research, a division of PennWell Corporation, has announced that it will move its annual flagship event – the KMI research conference on fibre optic markets – to Providence, Rhode Island to coincide
with the 54th IWCS/Focus conference. Through co-locating, IWCS and KMI believe they can offer increased net-working opportunities for registrants of each conference as well as convenience for teams of commercial and technical personnel to gain insights into their respective disciplines, all in one location.
The two conferences will still have separate programmes, and participants
will register separately and/or directly
with IWCS or KMI, depending on the programme of their interest. The KMI conference takes place on 14th and 15th November only.
KMI Research provides market research and consulting services in the fibre optics and advanced communications industries and is widely regarded as the premier source of information on telecom cables.
At its conferences, KMI presents its research results as well as the viewpoints of key executives and industry partici-pants. Further details can be obtained from KMI’s website www.kmiresearch.com.
