| PHS-Huta Cedler SA, Poland, has recently awarded Danieli Morgrdshammar, part of Danieli Group, Italy, a contract for the supply of mechanicals and electricals for major upgrading and modernisation of a two-strand wire rod mill. The modernisation of this plant will increase the productivity by approximately 200,000 tonnes per year, improving efficiency, extending the product range to SBQ products with higher final product quality. The upgrading will include a new 120 tonnes per hour Danieli Centro Combustion WB Furnace, a new 4-stand high-speed H-V compact roughing mill with descaling facilities and a tunnel-type furnace to be installed at ingoing side of the existing two-strand continuous mill. This will enable starting material size increase from present 105mm to 160mm, 12m long billets.
At delivery side of the existing mill, two new 10-pass DWB wire rod finishing blocks and two new laying heads of the latest Danieli generation will replace the old ones, while the controlled cooling conveyor will be prolonged and completed with slow-cooling and fast-cooling facilities in order to enable on-line heat treatment of the whole range. New finishing blocks design and new layout arrangement will be such to enable LTR Low Temperature Rolling operation, whenever required depending on steel grade. At each conveyors end, RRT rotating type pit and Easy-Down system will grant the formation of superior quality coils. New vertical-type coil handling facilities and Sund Birsta compactors will also be installed.
After modification, PHS-Huta Cedler SA will be able to produce 5.5 to 21.0mm wire rod at a production speed of 100m/s into 2.3 tonne coils on two strands. Range of grades is carbon steels, alloy steels for automotive industry and speciality steels including tool, high-speed and heat-resistant steels. The plant modification will require only a six-week mill shutdown and the start-up of the upgraded plant is expected in early 2004.
