| Outokumpu, Finland, the worlds second largest copper semi-products manufacturer, has recently announced the delivery of a 16,000 tonnes/year UPCAST continuous casting system to the Iranian copper producer Copper World. The contract was finalised during wire Dsseldorf 2004, and the plant is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2004. To date, Copper World had already installed a 36,000 tonnes/year rod production plant from Continuus Properzi, Italy, with one refinery furnace for recycling copper (FRHC) and one shaft-furnace for ETP copper rod.
Mr Ahmad Orouji, managing director of Copper World, commented: We are already a copper rod producer so we are familiar with the processes and equipment available. We now want to include oxygen-free rod into our production programme and range of products, while also continuing to produce FRHC and ETP rod with our existing equipment. We chose Outokumpu and UPCAST technology simply because we are convinced it will bring us the best return on our investment. Prior to making the final decision, representatives of Copper World visited the production facilities of other producers operating similar UPCAST systems.
The plant will be designed to produce 8mm oxygen-free copper wire rods and feature separate melting and holding furnaces, which will ensure most efficient melting of raw materials and a consistently low-level of oxygen in the copper. In addition, the latest developments in UPCAST technology, such as redesigned die-coolers and a new casting programme for the computer-controlled casting machine, will be included to the delivery to Copper World.
