| Lucent Technologies, USA, has recently been awarded an optical networking contract with Beijing Communication Corporation (BCC), a subsidiary of China Netcom, to build an advanced optical network connecting Beijing's suburbs. Under the term of the contract, Lucent will deploy a variety of systems and software products, including the Metropolis ADM MultiService Mux, WaveStar ADM16/1, Navis Optical Dynamic Network Analyzer (DNA), Navis Optical Network Mangement System(NMS), and WaveStar ITM-SC to construct 10Gbit/s optical rings for BCC. These optical solutions will allow BCC to increase its network capacity in the Beijing area, and enable the smooth migration from a traditional voice network to a multiservice transport network.
This contract marks the first win for the Metropolis ADM in Beijing, a product that has been rapidly gaining ground in the global market since it was announced late last year. Metropolis ADM serves as an integrated Ethernet-over-SDH multiplexer, enabling service providers to migrate from existing time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks to data-aware packet networks. Adding data services to optical networks increases revenue potential for customers and helps them offer a wide variety of new Ethernet services. Metropolis ADM integrates seamlessly into BCC's existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for an overlay network built for new services. The product integrates 2Mbit/s access and cross-connect functionality for 10Gbit/s applications, helping carriers save on capital expenditures, and its low power consumption and small footprint will help BCC save on operating expenses.
The Navis Optical DNA, the Navis Optical NMS and the WaveStar ITM-SC are all part of Lucent's Navis optical management solution, a portfolio of software products that provides comprehensive and integrated management solutions for optical transport networks. The Navis optical management solution simplifies management operations by allowing operators to provision end-to-end services across multi-service networks from a single system. It also makes it easy for carriers to integrate Lucent products into their existing optical networks, and is part of the Navis operations software.
