| Golden Telecom Inc., Russia, a major independent telecommunications operator, has announced the commercial operation of a Moscow network based on Gigabit-Ethernet technology. This network will allow the provision of data transmission services at speeds up to 1Gbit/s. The first segment of the network includes 24 access nodes located in 17 of the largest business centres in Moscow, at Golden Telecom's data centre, and at the point of traffic exchange with leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The bandwidth capacity of the Gigabit-Ethernet optical backbone network will be easily upgraded to 10Gbit/s if necessary.
Golden Telecom also announced its first service on the new network "Virtual Private LAN," which allows high-speed data exchanges at speeds up to 100Mbit/s (subsequently up to 1 Gbit/s). Users of the "Virtual Private LAN" service can also be provided with broadband Internet access and access to the resources of Golden Telecom's data centre. Mr Albert Safiullin, director for marketing and development of Golden Telecom, commented: �Gigabit-Ethernet technology offers an attractive price-efficiency ratio. By combining simple and widely implemented Ethernet technology with the resources of our optical network, we are now the first company in Moscow to offer Gigabit access for data and video transmission directly from our customers' offices�.
