Russians paving the way for XLPE cable
Maillefer SA, Switzerland, a world-wide leader of extrusion and winding solutions to the wire and cable and pipe industries, recently reported some 50 leaders from the Russian energy cable industry attended its seminar entitled XLPE Insulation for Power Cables. Hosted by the All Russian Cable Institute VNIIKP, this one-day event was held in Moscow on April 23rd. Utility companies and cable industrials were united for paving the way towards wide spread use of XLPE power cables.

The timing for the seminar recognised two factors that are changing the industry. Firstly, the demand for medium and high-voltage power cables is on the rise in the Russian Federation. Secondly, there is a growing trend to move from traditional paper to crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cables. Mr Antti-Jussi Rissanen, executive vice-president products, stated: Maillefer has a long and successful history in the field of MV and HV power cable production. We have experienced similar changes before and are proud to participate with the Russian cable industry in this challenging step.

With three recent orders on Maillefers books, the total of CV-lines sold has just exceeded 251. That unquestionably positions the company as the market leader for CV-lines with a world-wide cumulative market share estimated to be 60%. The seminar was a rare occasion for attendees to gain access to valuable information. Professor Peshkov I.B., President of Electrokabel Association chaired the seminar. The topics included the market situation, compounds, various crosslinking methods, and manufacturing solutions. Mr Raimo Roine described first hand experience on how the Finnish utility Turku Energy made the transition from paper to XLPE cables.
