Permanent Magnetic Brakes for pay-off applications

Permanent Magnetic Brakes offer a simple solution to improving tension control on pay-offs for most wire factories. Permanent Magnetic Brakes are very accurate and very smooth because all the tensioning is generated magnetically through the air.

There is no friction or wearing of parts. For retro-fit applications on cablers, stranders and twisters; Permanent Magnet Brakes require no electricity, which greatly simplifies the installation.

Most Permanent Magnetic Brakes come in various torque sizes and various shaft configurations, allowing ease of coupling to existing equipment.

Once adjusted to the correct setting, the torque supplied the Permanent Magnetic Brakes will not change, unlike ‘rope brakes’ or ‘band type brakes.’

In addition to regular ball bearing designs, some companies use Magnetic Technologies’ ‘angular contact bearing designs.’ If the application requires tensioning a heavy overhung spool, angular contact bearings are specifically designed to hold a heavy load. Angular contact designs are also used on ‘centrifugal’ type applications, such as serving machines.

Permanent Magnetic Brakes work by using two major components: magnets and a hysteresis disc. Torque is achieved by rotating a shaft connected to the hysteresis disc. As the shaft rotates, the hysteresis disc is magnetized and demagnetized thousands of times as it passes through a magnetic field.

The beauty of the hysteresis design is the force is not affected by rpm. This means as a spool’s diameter decreases and turns faster, the Permanent Magnetic Brake maintains the same Torque.

Adjustments can then be made by adjusting the magnetic force field or adjusting the air gap.
