Caballe´s Equipment for Stranding Milliken Conductors
C.M. Caballé, s.a., the Spanish based machine manufacturer with 60 years of experience, offers a wide range of machines and solutions for stranding Milliken conductors. This application is used for high and extra-high voltage underground copper cables.
The main concept is to avoid a conductor with a large and round cross section where losses due to skin effect are very high and to change it for several sector shape conductors isolated by some paper tapes working as a multi-conductor cable.
The number of sector shape conductors depends on the cable design, its section and the transmission voltage. The most common designs are made from four to seven conductors. Several paper tapes are inserted in the laying point among the different sector shape conductors.
Caballé offers the most suitable solution in two of the most critical processes to manufacture Milliken cables. That is, the rotating equipment for stranding each pre-spiralled sector shape copper conductor (Rigid Strander type) and the next process for laying up at the same time several conductors and some paper tapes to get a round cable (Drum Twister line).
Both lines have been upgraded with the latest technologies as well as process experiences to supply the most suitable solution to manufacture Milliken cables with the best productivity, flexibility and product quality of the market.
In respect of the Rigid Stranding line, Caballé offers its CES/E-91x630 model with an upgraded compacting head unit for stranding each pre-spiralled sector shape conductor. It has been designed with an accurate system of rollers position adjustment. The set of compacting rollers have been adapted to this application by avoiding sharp edges on the sector shape conductor that can damage the paper insulation. The rotation of this unit is digitally synchronized with the line speed of the capstan to have an accurate pre-spiralling lay length.
With the Drum Twister line, rotating pay-offs have been specially designed for this application with a higher braking force on each reel and a better tension accuracy among the conductors. The relative position of each sector shape conductor on the laying point has also been improved by using sector position sensors as a feed-back of the rotation speed on each pay-off and also by the use of enlarged sector fixation on the laying plate. Also a very smooth tape path with a very accurate guidance assures a successful application among the sector shape conductors. A specially designed closing unit, an stronger pulling caterpillar and a bigger capacity rotating take affirms Caballé’s prime position among Milliken rotating equipment suppliers.
