New fibre optic pavement cable

CommScope Inc., USA, a world leader in the design and manufacture of “last mile” cable and connectivity solutions for communication networks, has recently introduced a new fibre optic pavement cable specifically designed to reduce installation costs and construction time. It can be used by MSOs to deploy fibre to commercial, residential and small-to-mid-sized businesses, and it is also designed for enterprise applications such as metropolitan and campus sidewalks, roadways and parking lots.

Available in up to 72-fibre count, CommScope’s fibre optic pavement cable utilises a gel-filled central tube cable encased in a smooth-wall, welded copper armour that provides it with enhanced fibre protection and water-blocking characteristics. The product is rugged in design with excellent crush resistance and thermal stability, while providing tensile performance compatible with standard micro-trenching techniques. Since sharp edges are minimised, it also provides fibre protection during cable access and termination. The pavement cable’s unique, patent-pending design allows an installation method that can substantially reduce disruption of day-to-day traffic at the installation site since it requires only a 10mm wide by 8cm deep groove to be cut into a sidewalk, roadway, or parking lot. The pavement cable is placed at the bottom of the slot and held in place by a closed-cell, foamed backer rod. The opening is then easily sealed with common, commercially available hot sealant, roofing tar or caulking, depending upon the surface.
