Real-time quality control of fine coated wires and fibres

Founded in 1998, the Swiss company Sensoptic S.A. specialises in the design and manufacture of precision optical sensors and measuring systems for both OEM and end-user applications, providing high-quality, original and innovative products that are engineered to customers’ specifications. A major breakthrough in the quality control of fine coated wires has recently been achieved by the company with the introduction of the miniature optical Profile Sensor PS100-W.

The sensor is used to detect and measure in real-time surface faults and diameter irregularities of coated wires in two planes. Even at line speeds of 2,000m/min, the Profile Sensor allows accurate measurement and characterisation of micrometric defects such as lumps, neck-downs, blisters, flaws, spikes and coating breaks. Thanks to its unique build-in compressed air insert, the measurements are insensitive to dust and small debris from the manufacturing process. The new Profile Sensors allow manufacturers to record in real-time and continuously the production quality and obtain final quality reports of all the production spools, an operation that is becoming a necessity in the high value-added end of fine magnet wires and optical fibres.
