Precise measurement of flat cables
Providing the wire and cable industry with diameter measuring, controlling and testing equipment, Sikora AG, Germany, has introduced LASER 2030 XY-F/R, especially designed for on-line measurement of a double, triple or multi-wire flat cables, as well as for round conductors. This gauge head is available for a width of 2 to 25mm and provides a precise measurement of the width and height respectively at round conductors of the diameter, even in case of conductor twists. Another model, LASER 2050 XY-F/R, is available for width of 2 to 40mm. The LASER 2030 XY-F/R provides accurate measurement even in case the cable twists by ±15°, while every single axis gauge head as well as every standard XY-head requires a precise guiding of the conductor, because even the smallest twist of the cable causes errors in the measurement. Also of interest is the design of the gauge head, as the measuring axes are arranged under ±45° with the gauge head open at the bottom.
On-line quality control of automotive wires is of essential importance, as for example for the determination of the pitch between the conductors or the measurement of the insulation wall thickness. Sikora has also introduced FLAXRAY 8000, particularly suitable to measure flexible flat cables used in the automotive industry. These new conductors consist of rolled flat wires, which are isolated in an extrusion or calendar process. The new device FLAXRAY is based on X-ray technology and has been designed to continuously measure the most important dimensions of the flat cable, which are the width, the development of the thickness, dimensions and position of the conductor in relation to the edges, as well as the insulation thickness above and below the conductors. Within a few seconds after the start-up of the line, the FLAXRAY 8000 provides the operator with precise measurements and shows in combination with Sikora’s ECOCONTROL 2000 detailed information about the quality of the product, on which the end-user has highest requirements.
Furthermore, Sikora offers its X-RAY 2000 device, specifically designed for the use at insulating and jacketing lines to reduce the over consumption of material, while assuring a high-quality level and an increase in productivity. The applied X-ray technology makes the system operation as easy as a diameter gauge and provides continuous precise measurement and control values for wall thickness and eccentricity, as well as the diameter. The system is available as a stand-alone gauge head with the Profibus or RS485 interface or in combination with the processor unit ECOCONTROL 2000, which provides numerical and graphical display of the measuring values, as well as trend and statistical data.
