Caterpillar measuring unit
Specialising in the design and manufacture of pay-off and take-up equipment suitable for bare wire, bunched or stranded wire, insulated wire and fibre optic material, Wyrepak-Watkins Inc., USA, offers caterpillar measuring units that comprise a base plate, which supports a fixed lower caterpillar timing belt track on its upper face. This belt track serves to support the weight and longitudinal movement of the material being fed through the tracks. Input and output guide rollers are mounted at the entry and exit of the tracks.
A pivoting moveable pressure loaded track is mounted on hardened steel upright pillars to allow this upper track assembly to mechanically or pneumatically open or close. This results in it gripping the material, preventing any slip occurring between the material and the top track. This top track is then monitored for movement by an encoder or proximity sensor or it is mechanically connected and these signals from the encoder/proximity detector are pulsed to a pre-determining counter unit. This signals the start - winding - stop cycle.
The addition of the mechanically connected measuring system increases the accuracy. With the electronic measurement, accuracy of 0.010% = 1,000mm in 1,000m is achievable. With the mechanical measurement, accuracy of 0.10% = 1m per thousand meters. In both instances, the maximum throughput speed is 500m/min. The LED-type display counter unit is programmable to allow start/stop operations. The unit includes a programmable correction factor to ensure continued measured accuracy. The unit is supplied for bench-top mounting as a standard, but it can be supplied on an adjustable height frame if required. A hinged guard enclosure with electrically interlocked guard door is also available.
