Field-proven coiling and spooling from Niehoff

Coiling and spooling are critical processes in the manufacturing of wire and cable. As quality demands are always increasing, coilers and spoolers of all kinds must respond to high quality criteria. Niehoff offers a wide range of systems with various features for different applications. These systems have been developed by Niehoff, Niehoff Endex North America (NENA), Niehoff’s North American subsidiary, and the former Maschinenfabrik Bongard.

Niehoff Endex manufactures its coilers under the brand name ECC (Endex Continuous Coilers). The ECC-42 continuous down coiler is designed for inline operation with extrusion, tinning or drawing lines, and is suitable for bare and plated copper, aluminium wire as well as insulated solid and stranded cable. The rosette laying is performed by an eccentric movement of the container. The maximum production speed of the ECC-42 is 43m/s (8,500fpm). The rotating table used for the rosette pattern is also equipped with a thumping function to increase the coiling capacity by up to 30%.

The Endex Coiling System guarantees a safe pay-off of up to 8m/s (1,600fpm) of coiled cables even after long transport distances, and a high barrel filling weight. These coilers are suitable for use with cardboard barrels, stems or baskets.

Niehoff’s WF type barrel coilers are designed for inline operation with drawing machines. They are suitable for the use of barrels, stems and disposable containers made of cardboard, and can be used for non-stop operation in conjunction with wire productions systems. Container change can be fully automatic, which means that the barrel coilers are also suitable for unattended production.

The WSV type static coilers wind the wire around a stationary spool. A cylindrical or conical coiling pattern can be achieved using a programmable logic controller (PLC).

The machines can be automated to a high level by being combined with spool transport equipment. The most versatile method for spooling is dynamic spoolers which wind the wire onto a spool rotating around its own axis in a horizontal position.

A compact design, hydraulic lifting table for loading and unloading the spools and an automatic traverse system make these systems very user-friendly and provide the highest quality of the package.

The Niehoff Package System NPS was developed mainly for high-speed production of automotive wires. It consists of special spoolers and multiway spools made of ABS plastic. The spoolers use a patented wire-laying technology to spool the wires conically onto these spools. The spools offer a secure hold of the wire both when full or part-empty. Empty spools can be fully dismantled and require little transportation space compared with traditional spools.

At present the NPS spool range includes eight different models and sizes for different applications. Among the most recent NPS spool offerings is the NPS 400/100 which has a flange diameter of 400mm, a winding width of 100mm and a winding volume of 4,400cm³.

The NPS 400/100 provides a replacement for hard-to-handle coils of cable, weighs a maximum of 15kg when full and permits the easy overhead unwinding of the cable.

The most recent NPS spool with a flange diameter of 630mm or 560mm is designed for the spooling and transportation of wire bundles and strands, and features a correspondingly sturdy design.

For more than two years, the field-proven Bongard range of coilers for plated and bare conductors has been offered by Niehoff which is gradually adding new Bongard machines ‘made by Niehoff’ to its product range.

The copper wire coilers of the STN-650/800-TT series main application is for inline operation behind a galvanic plant. They are suitable for tin, silver and nickel plated copper wires with a wire diameter range from 1.00 up to 3.5mm for both soft and hard wire.

These machines are equipped with a tilting table that enables semi- or fully automatic non-stop operation of the line. The laying of the rosettes can be regulated steplessly. The coiling speed is 50 to 900m/minute.

The coilers of the TW-415/425/480-KT series are designed for semi- or fully automatic nonstop operation with drawing lines. The coilers are capable of handling two different barrel heights.

Among the special features is the high production speed for bare wires of up to 36m/s and the linear to coiling speed rosette lay, guaranteeing a safe pay-off and a high barrel filling.
