Take the take-up and pay-off rebuild option

One major benefit of rebuilt machinery is the price, which is usually approximately 75% of the new list price, says Lloyd & Bouvier. The company says the most important aspect of rebuilding a machine is the replacement of all the worn parts with new and also a properly rebuilt machine should have all-new bearings, belts, hoses, wiring, motors and drives.

Ease of customisation is yet another major advantage of a rebuilt machine. This can often be achieved without a hefty price tag or a manufacturing time increase. The design of each machine can be dealt with individually and built as a single unit, and, as such, can be readily modified. Pintle, shafts, line direction, sheave diameter, type of breaking, and so on, are all key factors in the overall redesign of the machinery, and modification often includes a wide range of requests.

These include: the widening of the frame for larger reels; the installation of a four-speed transmission system to cover a larger product range; the relocation of the operator control station; special software programming for acceleration, deceleration and stopping; the integration of testing and monitoring equipment; loading and unloading devices; automation systems for operator ease and process repeatability; safety interlocks; voltage changes; alteration to the machine’s colour; and whatever else a company’s needs may be.

Additionally, a new motor and drive package must be sized properly to the customer’s technical specifications, parti-cularly if a used machine had a 5 HP motor and control, and the rebuilt machine is being designed for a faster run speed or a heavier product range.

Before deciding on a supplier or a rebuilt piece of equipment, Lloyd & Bouvier suggests customers consider the following:

One last but very important step when buying rebuilt machinery is to ask your supplier to test run your product on the equipment prior to shipment. This one step can ensure optimal performance of the machine before you receive and install it. Any changes and fine-tuning can then be done, thereby minimising installation and start-up times. In summary, Lloyd & Bouvier says: “If a used piece of equipment is properly rebuilt, it represents good value and has the same life expectancy as a new machine, without the price tag.”
