Portal traversing reel pay-offs and take-ups

Louis Kalmar, president of Canada’s Kalmark Integrated Systems, says the company now offers a complete mechanical guard package as standard on its entire range of portal pay-offs and take-ups.

Kalmark manufactures a variety of reel handling equipment, including both stationary versions of gantry and floor-mounted portal roll-through machines.

In order to meet full compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Canadian Standards Association’s safety guarding guidelines, all of the company’s machines are now offered with complete surround enclosures, which provide maxi-mum safety protection for the process line and machine operators.

Kalmark also offers a professional engineering service for the application of protective guard packages to existing equipment, together with pre-start health and safety reviews.

The most popular style of take-up is the portal traversing roll-through machine, which traverses on floor rails. The model PRT, for example, is extremely compact, there-by minimising the amount of floorspace required. These machines are available for a reel range from 600mm to 4.5m.

The gantry machines are also available as stationary (model GS) or traversing types (model GT), within which the reels are supported in an overhead carriage.

For example, Kalmark’s smallest gantry style stationary unit has both reel raise/lower and pintles open/closed functions performed by manual hand cranks. All of these machine types are offered with standard electromechanical push button controls.

A wide variety of reel drive and wire tension control systems are offered for various winding applications, typically utilising shaft-mounted AC gear motors.

All of the units are PLC controlled and can be supplied with standard features, such as auto reel load/unload, cable tension control, layer winding, reel flange delay, and process status, eg tension indication.

All auxiliary devices, such as accumulators, binders, caterpillars, capstans, counters, dancers, taping heads, together with an entire line of cablers and stranders, are also available for both insulated and bare wire applications.
