Wardwell: the history of braiding

Founded in 1911 by industrialist Simon Wardwell, the history of the Wardwell Braiding Machine Company is closely inter-twined with the braiding industry itself.

To better serve the wire and cable market Wardwell engineers adapted the original deflector braider principle in the 1970s to create the first Speedmaster braiders, which could braid fine wire at 150 rpm.

That benchmark would not be eclipsed until 2002 when Schnellflechter Berlin, a subsidiary of Wardwell, introduced the first braider to run at 180 rpm.

In the 1980s, Wardwell began a series of strategic acquisitions and expansion – buying Schnellflechter Berlin (1994) and Spirka Maschinenbau (2001). In late 2003 Schnellflechter and Spirka merged to form Wardwell Europe GmbH, combining two of the leading German braiding machine manufacturers for wire and cable, hose, medical and textile applications. In 2001, Wardwell Italy was founded to offer new state-of-the-art winders and pay-offs to support the braiding line and provide sales and service throughout that region for Wardwell products.

Today Wardwell remains on the forefront of the industry, developing and offering new high-speed braiders and winders for tomorrow’s applications like super fine wire, while continuing to enhance its current products with increased efficiency and higher speeds. The full product line-up of braiding machines comprises: the Rotary Deflector, Speedmaster – 16 and 24 C, Rapid Braider – 16 and 24 C, Rotary Lever Arm, Dratex – 12, 16 and 24 C, Spirka DF – 12, 16 and 24 C, Unidra (horizontal) – 24 C, Fo3 (vertical and horizontal) – 16, 24, 32, and 36 C.

In spiral winders Wardwell has: DW series – 6, 8, 12, 16, 18, 24 C, Helix type 6036 – 18 and 36 C. In bobbin winders there are semi-automatic – 2 and 3 spindle models and automatic (and wire splitting) – 2 and 4 spindle models.

Wardwell’s pay-offs for winders are available as follows: static, unrolling (single wire), dynamic (single wire) and dynamic (multi-wire). Accessories supplied by the company include longitudinal taping, spiral taping, pay-offs, take-ups and dancer systems.
